Roger Ditcham, who has died suddenly aged 69, was a village champion for Freethorpe and cub scout stalwart.

People paying warm tribute this week said he was “an amazing man” who would do anything for anyone.

His widow Margaret said she had been overwhelmed by the many touching tributes, including one from a former cub scout now living in New Zealand.

Mr Ditcham was born in Great Yarmouth, moving to Cantley aged five with his younger sister and parents.

A former Acle High School pupil he spent most of his working life at British Sugar’s Cantley plant in the stores.

He met his wife at a scout leader training weekend at Old Lakenham hall and the couple married in 1971.

He was awarded a silver acorn by the scout movement and clocked up almost 50 years service.

In March 2005 he became a first responder and as a blood donor he parted with 83 pints.

He died on May 5 having suffered a stroke.

Villager Rebecca Spencer said he was an amazing man, adding: “This is a huge loss not only to the village but to so many people. He did so much for so many. Everybody is so upset.

“This village is devastated.

“He never ever said no to anyone. We are going to miss him so much.”

Mrs Ditcham said her husband was “a giving man” who by donating organs would continue to help others after his death.

A private service is being held for family only at Gorleston crematorium tomorrow, Thursday, followed by a service of thanksgiving and celebration at Freethorpe methodist church at 12 noon, all welcome.

Mr Ditcham also leaves two children Claire and Adrian, and three grandchildren Charlotte, Benjamin, and Olivia.
