A Norfolk man who gave over 40 years of his life to public and community service has been remembered for his dedication to serving others.

Jack Alfred Sadler, who was born on February 1, 1935 passed away peacefully on January 9 in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Mr Sadler had been a Spixworth Parish Councillor since 1978 and Clerk of the Governors of both Spixworth schools for over 21 years.

He also held the position of chair or vice-chair of the Norfolk Association of Parish and Town Councils for 40 years.

Norfolk County Council (NCC) managing director Dr Wendy Thomson said: 'During my time as managing director I have come to not only admire Jack's exceptional record of public service but also his wisdom and the regard in which he was held in Norfolk.'

Mr Sadler was also a regular attendee at Broadland District Council committee meetings in an observational capacity. Senior committee officer Sara Utting said: 'Jack was extremely well-respected and liked by all those who knew and worked with him.'

Jim Graves, Clerk to Horsford Parish Council, described Mr Sadler as 'a tower of strength' in local government circles.

Mr Sadler's efforts and ideas also helped raise over £70,000 for the Norfolk Air Ambulance.

He received an award for his contributions in relation to his link between the Norfolk Association of Local Councils and the Norfolk Police Authority and Norfolk Constabulary (1992-2009).

Ian Sturgess, from the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, said: 'For us Jack could be seen as a critical friend, happy to challenge on behalf of the local councils and indeed the people of Norfolk.'

He supported the Royal Air Force and received a commendation in 1966 for 'meritorious service'. He was also mentioned in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in June 1986 for 'service to the community at RAF Coltishall'.

Mr Sadler served in various capacities on the Norfolk Airport Consultative Committee (NACC), was a member of the Patient Participation Group: Friends of Magdalen Medical Practice; Secretary/Treasurer of Institute of Advanced Norfolk Motorcyclists; and a keen supporter of The Theatre Royal.
