Albert Carver, who has died at the age of 83, was a retired accountant who worked for many years in the wines, spirits and brewing trades in Norwich and Ipswich.

Mr Carver, of Clabon Road, Norwich, was company secretary for Barwell and Sons in Norwich and then worked in Ipswich for brewer Tolly Cobbold from 1972 to 1985.

He was responsible for dealing with VAT before full computerisation was introduced, and as internal auditor travelled around Tolly pubs and off-licences checking the accounts.

In 1985 he took early retirement and returned to Norwich, the city of his birth, with his wife Kath.

For over 20 years Mr Carver was honorary auditor and treasurer for the Eastern Counties Wine and Spirit Association, regional voice and benevolent services provider for members of the drinks trade.

A lifelong supporter of and season ticket holder at Norwich City, he used to regularly travel to home matches from his “exile” in Ipswich.

Mr Carver was also a stalwart of the Norwich and District Table Tennis League as a young man and a veteran, a keen badminton player, ballroom dancer, allotment holder and gardener.

Conscripted into the Army in 1942 until 1947, he served in North Africa and Italy. While in Italy he suffered a twisted right knee after being ordered to play a “morale-boosting” game against another battalion on a frozen, rutted field. He underwent surgery and later received compensation and an Army pension.

Mr Carver is survived by his wife of over 57 years, sons Tom and Alan and three grandchildren.
