Police closed off a city centre street after reports of smoke coming from the cellar of a building in Norwich.

Firefighters were called to the building in Queens Road just after 3.30pm after reports from members of the public that they call smell burning.

Police closed off Ber Street as a precaution while fire crews investigated.

Fire crews from Norwich and Sprowston discovered that a contractor was carrying out work on drains and sewers, which was believed to be the source of the smell.

A spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said once the crews had established there was no danger to the public, they left the scene.

Ber Street was reopened by 4.45pm.
