A charity site has been set up to pull in donations to stop a former Norwich City star having to sell one of his prized medals.
Peter Mendham says he is so short of cash that he could be forced to flog the Division Two medal he picked up when the Canaries won the title in 1985-86.
The ex midfielder says he needs money to pay a £500 bill for repairs to his van, which he needs for work.
The news has touched fans, with Alan Potter setting up JustGiving site for people to donate.
The message on the page reads: 'Peter Mendham is a legend in the eyes of many Norwich City supporters and today we saw on his Facebook page that he is putting his championship-winning medal up for sale to fund the shortfall in the costs for repairing his van.
'He needs his van to work and make a living. We feel no player of this great football club should have to sell something of sentimental value to fund this, so we ask the Norwich faithful to help out a loyal player of nine years and over 200 appearances in the yellow and green to donate what they can and help Peter back onto the road.
'Thank you, OTBC!'
On his Facebook page, Mr Mendham wrote: 'Finally my van has been repaired! Thank you so much Nigel at Wensum Motors, Costessey.
'I spent over £2,500 at a garage that could not find the cause of the problem and Nigel has got me back on the road for £500 including a year's MOT. I am so happy.'
He added: 'Only problem is I only have £250 so who will start the bidding? My Championship medal is up for grabs...there must be a keen follower of football and the Canaries that would love to have this fantastic souvenir?'
Mendham was a key member of Ken Brown's City squad that easily won the Second Division title in 1985-86, playing with the likes of Steve Bruce, Dave Watson and Chris Woods.
He made 267 appearances for Norwich between 1978-87, scoring 29 goals.
In February 2007, he was jailed for seven-and-a-half years - later reduced to five years - for wounding with intent by stabbing his former girlfriend Charlotte Hyam.
Local author Edward Couzens-Lake is currently working on writing a book about Mendham. He tweeted: 'Currently working with Peter Mendham on his life story titled 'Life On The Inside', a humorous & revelatory look back over his playing career but also his life and the darker turn it took shortly after he had retired from the game. #ncfc fan stories/recollections welcomed!'
Mr Mendham's Facebook post continued: 'Unfortunately I was born too early but I would have played for City for nothing in any case ....alas the regime back in the 70s and 80s knew that as well.
'My health is my wealth .... but I won't get my van back unless I get the money together .... so try a bid. Thank you.'
