Grant Holt's memorable four-season spell with Norwich City drew to a close on Monday when he dropped down a division to sign for Wigan Athletic.

The two clubs agreed a fee for the 32-year-old striker at the weekend, reported to be in the region of £2m and, after successfully coming through a medical, he put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the DW Stadium.

Holt will join the Latics on a 10-day pre-season tour of the United States and could make his first high profile appearance for his new club at Wembley, with the FA Cup winners taking on champions Manchester United in the Community Shield on Sunday, August 11.

Before that there's the small matter of Wigan's first Championship fixture since relegation, with Owen Coyle's side kicking off their league campaign at Barnsley the previous weekend.

Coyle, who has now made eight signings since replacing Roberto Martinez as Wigan manager last month, spoke of his delight after clinching the signing of a man who scored 78 goals in 168 appearances during his time at Carrow Road.

'This is a fantastic piece of business for us at a really good price,' he told the club's official website. 'Grant is a proven goal-scorer at every level and he will definitely bring something new to the table that we were missing in the squad.

'There is already a great buzz about the place since the new boys have started coming through the door and this is another one that will really lift the place.

'He's been a hero to the fans at every club he's been and I know the Norwich fans are sad to see him go, he's been one of the icons of their success in recent years. But now it's the Wigan fans' turn to enjoy him and we're all delighted he's coming on board.'

The move will take Holt to within a reasonably short drive of his family home of Carlisle and following the departure of star striker Arouna Kone to Everton for a rumoured £6m should now be Wigan's main man up front. That wouldn't necessarily have been the case at Carrow Road following Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel's big money arrival.

With just Van Wolfswinkel and Luciano Becchio as the only two recognised strikers at the club manager Chris Hughton will be looking to boost his side's firepower before the start of next season,

PSV star Ola Toivonen has been linked with the Canaries after a fee of £4.8m had been agreed with the Dutch giants whilst Lokomotiv Moscow forward Dame N'Doye is the latest forward tipped for a move to Norwich.

However, reports suggest that City will have to almost double their reported £6m bid for the Senegalese star if they are to stand a chance of securing his signature.
