Former mayor praised for saving local beauty spot in latest tribute
More tributes have been paid to a Norfolk couple who died within three hours of each other.
Former North Walsham town mayor Roy, 87, and his wife Audrey Haynes, 84, also a community stalwart, both died on June 7.
After retirement, Mr Haynes founded North Walsham’s Bluebell Pond Society, to save the local beauty feature which was in danger of being built over.
More than £700 was raised for the society from the collection at the couple’s funeral at Cromer crematorium.
Mr Haynes was chairman of the society, and member George Blackburn has paid tribute to the couple.
He said: “They will be very much missed. Roy was the founding father of the society in 1990 and worked tirelessly on the planning, restoration, maintenance and promotion of the pond and surrounding land. It was a great honour working alongside him.
“The Mayday Festival of Fun stemmed from the opening of the Bluebell Pond in 1993 and went on to be a great success raising lots of money for good causes and helping many other groups to raise money for their causes.
“Many people were involved in both the pond and the festival and much fun was had by all along the way.
“We would also like to sincerely thank all those who donated to Roy and Audrey’s collection which went to the society. Over £700 was raised.”
The couple were married for more than 60 years. Both twins, they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary together two years ago.
Born and raised in South Yorkshire, they settled in north Norfolk, living in Mundesley and North Walsham, 50 years ago.
Retired steel and chemical engineer Mr Haynes was twice mayor of North Walsham, in 1998 and 2003.
While working for his last employer, British Gas, Mr Haynes was among those developing the Bacton Gas site and is on film turning the wheel which opened the flow of gas from the North Sea Leman field into the UK for the first time, in 1968.
