By the time most of us are stirring in our beds, north Norfolk's fishermen are heading back to shore after a morning's work at sea.

Well-known for their famous catches of crab and lobster, generations of local fishermen have depended on the sea for their livelihoods up and down our coastline.

Many of us will never experience what this intriguing life at sea is like, but one Cromer fisherman has written a book of short stories, inspired by his life at sea and his vivid imagination.

The Old Man and the Boy and Other Stories of the Sea is the first book of stories by fisherman-come-writer Keith Shaul, who has spent over 50 years at sea. The collection of five fictional stories is complemented by one true-life tale, Waiting to Go.

Talking of the public's curiosity with fishermen, Mr Shaul said: 'People want to know what we do, what we're waiting for before we launch and what a general day involves for us. They're petrified to ask when they see us, but they shouldn't be.'

Mr Shaul made his first trip to sea at the age of five from Hemsby. He has also been based at Lowestoft and Mundesley, with a stint in the merchant navy.

My Shaul, of Cley Road, Holt, said: 'My life has been my groundwork. I love the sea, I've always loved the sea. We are a seafaring nation. Most people would like to go to sea but can't and if I can let people know what that's like then that's great.'

Based at Cromer for the last 10 years, the 66-year-old began writing poetry many years ago but turned to writing short stories in 2012 as a way to give readers a deeper insight into life at sea.

The book, which is already available as an e-book, has been positively reviewed. One reader praised the stories saying: 'They are told with great warmth and humour. You also get a glimpse into the experiences of being a fisherman.'

Illustrated by Mr Shaul's granddaughter, 20-year-old Jade Shaul, the book is available from The Rocket House Café in Cromer and World of Fish in Pakefield, Suffolk, for £2.99.

Mr Shaul is half way through a second book which he hopes to finish by the end of the winter.
