Dozens of firefighters spent almost eight hours tackling a thatch blaze at a farmhouse in Mundham, which saw two people evacuated.
Ten fire crews - as well as the police and ambulance service - were called to the fire in Bergh Apton Road.
The incident, which happened at a thatched property, began just after 6pm on Saturday night.
About 60 firefighters were on scene by 7.30pm, from both Norfolk and Suffolk.
Two people were evacuated from the farmhouse, but no-one is believed to have been injured.
Gregg Preston, assistant chief officer on site, said when crews arrived they found a fire had developed on the left hand side of the roof.
He said they were tackling the fire by creating a fire break in the middle of the roof to stop it spreading. At the same time, crews are inside the building tackling the fire from underneath and preventing water damage.
He said the nature of tackling thatch fires meant it was likely to be a drawn out process, with crews expected to be battling the fire until around midnight, and staying on scene overnight.
Firefighters were parked bumper to bumper along the narrow country lane, where the air was thick with smoke.
A pile of thatch cleared by the crews is on the property's front garden, with a clear fire break cut down the middle of the roof.
The incident was declared over at 1.50am. Firefighters returned on Sunday morning to check on the property, but had left by 7am.
