Firefighters have been dealing with a blazing embankment at former gravel workings in West Norfolk.

A large area of scrub and dried grass caught light at Brow of the Hill, along a track which leads from Leziate to Bawsey Pits.

The Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service responded to calls of a grass fire at around 12.30pm.

Six pumps and a water carrier attended the scene, in a heavily-wooded area half a mile from the road. Three pumps drove into the woods, while firefighters used hosereel jets to tackle the flames.

Station manager Bob Ayres, from King's Lynn, said at its height an area of around 400 sq m was alight.

'The wind and terrain has done us a favour today,' he said, as crews damped down the scene.

While the cause of the fire is unknown, Mr Ayres said said it could have been caused by carelessness, such as a discarded cigarette butt.
