Norfolk County Council is preparing to support the national response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

The local authority said it had been in contact with the Home Office to determine the scale of resettlement across the UK.

It follows Prime Minister David Cameron's announcement yesterday that the country will take on 'thousands' more refugees fleeing the violence in Syria.

The council said that its managing director, Dr Wendy Thomson, had been in touch with various district councils to ensure there was a coordinated response across public services.

Meanwhile, Norwich South MP Clive Lewis said the council needed to 'step up' and address the problem.

He added: 'I would urge the county council to move with full haste to invite in the most desperate Syrian refugees, because time is not on their side. We need to show some human compassion.'

Norwich City Council, which is responsible for housing people in the city, said it was 'continuing' to work with government agencies to support individuals seeking refuge in the UK.

But Norwich North MP Chloe Smith said the authority should carefully consider its resources before making a decision.

She added: 'The local housing authority would certainly have to think about its resources, as there are already constituents who are struggling to get houses and work.

'These decisions are not as simple as sticking your hand up, they have to be properly assessed.'
