The fly-tipping of rubbish in an area around Weeting is being blamed on the new charges introduced when leaving DIY waste at Norfolk’s tips.

Parish Councillor Jeff Prosser said he does not think it is a coincidence that DIY waste has been dumped in the village since the charges were introduced on April 1.

He said: “I have never seen that sort of rubbish before like kitchen fittings and cupboards. We have always had a bit of dumping but not on this scale.

“I don’t think it is a coincidence that days after the charges were introduced we see this type of fly-tipping in the village.”

Mr Prosser said the costs have been pushed onto the parish council who have had to clear up the waste themselves.

The county council introduced the charges for DIY rubbish at its waste recycling centres in a move expected to save them about £280,000.

Charges include £5 for each sack of non-recyclable rubbish, £3 per 80 litre bag of rubble and £4 a car tyre.

Items which will be charged include rubble, timber and plasterboard.

Household items, such as bedding, carpet and underlay will still be taken for free.

Dog walker Helen Shepherd said three loads of rubbish have also been dumped over the past couple of weeks in Thetford Forest between Weeting and Feltwell.

She said the rubbish has been left quite far into the forest and is not nice for the dog walkers who use the area.
