Saint George and the dragon will not be returning to Wymondham this year after organisers cancelled a celebration of England's patron saint.
The Wymondham Lions group has staged a programme of entertainment to mark St George's Day at the Market Cross in the town for the last few years.
But officials said they would not be holding the event at the weekend after saying that it would cost 900 to close the road.
Lion David Webster added that it would have been difficult to organise the procession during the Easter weekend, but they would look to return next year.
However, a spokesman for Norfolk County Council said it would have only cost the Lions 36 to close the road.
