East Anglian commuters could benefit from safer and quicker journeys from a £400,000 project which could see traffic lights installed at the notorious Fiveways roundabout on the A11.

Philip Hammond earmarked cash for new lights in his Congestion Relief Programme fund in this week's budget amid concerns about the safety of the junction following the dualling of the A11 in 2015.

Highways England will now carry out a feasibility study to see if lights are needed.

At the time the roundabout was designed, the option of lights was left open.

West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock urged the government to act fast following the budget announcement.

He said: 'Since the A11 dualling was completed in 2015, I have campaigned tirelessly for safety improvements to Fiveways so I warmly welcome the announcement by the Department for Transport that £400,000 will be made available for the installation of traffic lights at Fiveways. This highlights the government's commitment to improving our region's road network and improving journeys for many people in West Suffolk. I'm delighted to see these improvements as part of a £220 million fund to tackle specific pinch-points across the nation.

'These improvements will undoubtedly bring higher levels of safety as well as reducing congestion on the roundabout and on the approaches to the roundabout. We must now get the lights installed quickly, so that the problems of Fiveways can be put behind us.'

Highways England area manager for Suffolk, Stephen Greenhill, said: 'This investment is designed to help relieve congestion and improve safety on important national, regional and local routes, including this junction of the A11 at Mildenhall.

'Currently the Fiveways junction is undergoing a feasibility study to see what the best solution is to relieve congestion at the roundabout. The roundabout was designed to enable traffic lights to be fitted in the future if needed to address increased traffic and congestion, so this is one of the options we are exploring.

'£2.8 million has been allocated for the work and a number of smaller schemes nearby to complement it. We will keep road users informed as we continue to develop a solution.'
