New premises for Lowestoft charity is officially opened

Councillors as well as volunteers and members of the Aid and Assist charity gathered to mark the official opening of the charity's new premises at the former New Globe Inn on the High Street, Lowestoft.

The ribbon cutting took place on March 17 and was cut by Stevie – a trainee at Aid and Assist for more than 10 years – and Lowestoft mayor Nick Webb.

Mr Webb said: 'Aid and Assist has been one of the integral parts of Lowestoft for the last 30 years or so and has helped so many people who are grateful for their work.

'It's a pleasure to be here this morning and to be able to support them as they open their new premises.'

Also in attendance were Bob Fairclough and Brian Hunter - who started Aid and Assist 34 years ago.

The Aid and Assist project works with vulnerable adults and people with learning difficulties and supports 11 trainees – all of whom are aged over 25-years-old.

The purchasing of the new building was funded by grants from the locality budgets of local councillors.

And the premises will provide the required room for a workroom for trainees to refurbish unwanted furniture which will then be sold in the onsite shop along with other items to raise further funds for the charity.

Sue Jacklin, chairman of Aid and Assist, said: 'Thanks goes to lots of people who have given us money and support to move here – including the local councillors, Adnams and the ACT Foundation.

'I am very pleased with the new building as it is close to the town, so we will be easily able to take deliveries of new items and our trainees are very excited as they think it is nice and homely.

'This will enable us to continue to give our trainees a variety of different activities and look after their well being.'
