Land Rover today revealed the first glimpse of its new full-sized, seven-seat Discovery sport utility vehicle.

The new Discovery embodies Land Rover's drive to go Above and Beyond, combining British desirability with an unstoppable spirit of adventure.

The company says the all-new fifth generation, of a model first shown in 1989, has been created with absolute versatility, capability and technology like no other and continues the Land Rover Above and Beyond journey.

The teaser pictures clearly show Land Rover making the Discovery even more stylish, taking it further away from its original utilitarian roots, and moving it further upmarket with a look more in keeping with its its Range Rover stablemates. Even so, Land Rover stresses the new Discovery will be just as capable off-road.

Like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, the new Discovery is set to be considerably lighter, which could see a smaller 2.0-litre engine introduced alongside the traditional 3.0-litre V6.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's chief design officer, said: 'New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover's design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV.'

More than 1.2 million Discovery models have been sold since it went on sale 27 years ago.

The New Discovery will receive its world premiere on September 28 ahead of the Paris Motor Show.
