A new multi-million pound one-stop health shop in Thetford is set to open on schedule in the New Year, despite some last minute technical hitches.

The £4.5m facility will open its doors to patients for the first time on Tuesday January 9 following a 20-year campaign and two year construction project.

Officials spoke of their “delight” with the state-of-the-art building, off Mundford Road, which will replace Thetford's cottage hospital and provide new services for the town.

James Romana-Powling , project manager for Norfolk Primary Care Trust, said: “We now have a 21st century state-of-the-art building, which will provide integrated care under one roof. It is fantastic news for Thetford and will make a huge difference for the community.”

Mr Romana-Powling added that the PCT would be “mothballing” the town's Victorian hospital, in Earls Street, and would be talking with Breckland Council and agents to look at the future use of the site.

Existing services from Thetford Cottage Hospital, including physiotherapy, chiropody, and x-ray departments have moved to the healthy living centre as well as outpatient services like audiology and podiatry, which were withdrawn by the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust in 2005.
