Yarmouth police today launched a full-scale murder inquiry after a post mortem investigation on the body of a 64-year-old man revealed he had met a violent death.

The body was found by a detective constable in a flat in the town's Yarmouth Way at 5pm on Monday following a telephone tip-off to the police.

Two local men, who it is believed knew the victim, are being interviewed at Yarmouth Police Station. One had been arrested on Monday night and the other on Tuesday evening.

Det Insp Andy Guy, who is leading the investigation with 35 officers, said: “The body is that of an unemployed single man. The detective who found it entered the premises through a window. Following today's post mortem, which revealed a level of violence was used, we are treating it as a murder inquiry.”

Det Insp Guy said the man had died some time between 8am on Friday and Monday afternoon and he was keen to hear from any members of the public who might heard an altercation or seen something unusual over that period.

He said the name of the dead man was likely to be disclosed on Thursday after a formal identification had been carried out by relatives.
