It was supposed to be a trip away to relax and recuperate after a stressful year.
But Doug and Jeannie Rolph's holiday in Cape Verde was blighted by the news that a car had hit their house in Mundford.
The culprit drove off leaving behind substantial damage – which is believed will cost in the thousands to repair - to the door frame of the 17th century building on St Leonards Street.
Such was the impact, potted plants in the home fell over and front door was left wide open all night. The couple are unable to use the door as it could be structurally unsafe.
Mrs Rolph said when she received a phone call about the incident, which is believed to have happened at around 11pm on Saturday, October 21, she was 'in bits'.
'It blighted the rest of the week,' she said. 'For three days we did not get any sleep. I would lie awake and think what about this? What about that? You don't need it, especially after the year we've had.'
On July 12 Mr Rolph suffered a cardiac arrest at home and is still suffering with ill health. The holiday was organised to allow the couple some relaxation.
The pair said there has been an issue in the village with anti-social behaviour and cars racing. They have had their car, which usually sits outside their house, hit numerous times, with one being written off.
They have said a witness has come forward claiming the person who hit their house had been drinking before getting into the car and racing around the village.
The couple's neighbours have also said during the Saturday night there had been cars racing around.
One said: 'We saw two cars racing up the road. We saw them driving like idiots but we couldn't get the number plates.'
He added that his son came into his bedroom to say it sounded like someone was knocking at the door of the Rolphs' house. He now believes the knocking heard was the car as it backed into the house.
Mrs Rolph has said the incident 'is the last straw' and they couple will now look to move away.
She said: 'We brought our four children up here. It has been a family home. But we have had enough.'
A police spokesman said they were notified of a road traffic accident at around 7am on the Sunday and enquiries are ongoing.
