A north Norfolk seaside community has raised enough cash to send a young villager to Disneyland Paris next month to celebrate a remission in her serious kidney condition.

Hayley Bird, 26, suffers from nephrocalcinosis and Williams Syndrome, both affecting her kidney which is no longer functioning properly.

She may need an organ transplant one day and her dad Chris, 50, has volunteered to donate one of his own kidneys to help his daughter.

But the Mundesley family was delighted last month when Hayley saw a specialist who was happy with her condition, which seemed stable. He did not want to see her again for five months. Previously, Hayley had needed to be checked every two months, said Mr Bird.

'Hayley had a kidney infection at the beginning of the year and went into hospital. Afterwards, it seemed to have improved her,' he added.

Fund-raising in Mundesley and by family members means that about £1,500 has been collected to send Hayley on holiday for a week in September.

We thought we would seize the chance while her health's good,' said Mr Bird.

Donations include sums raised by Mundesley's Christmas pageant - in which Hayley has taken part as an angel for the past two years - pageant Roman soldier Peter Button who died his hair pink for the cause, the village's Ship Inn, and by Mr Bird's sister Jenny Robinson and cousin Stuart Bird who have also raised cash for the appeal.

Hayley will spend the week at Disneyland with her dad, mum Linda, two sisters and a niece and nephew.

'What everyone's done is great - we're really appreciative,' Mr Bird added. The family hope to run a stall as a 'thank you' at this year's Mundesley Christmas lights switch-on and will divide proceeds between cancer and kidney research charities.
