For when the all-seeing panto prop speaks during Sheringham's festive stage frolic, it will be the sound of screen star John Hurt.

The acting legend has agreed to lend his voice and support to the Little Theatre's production of Snow White.

Mr Hurt's stellar cinema career includes key roles in the The Elephant Man and Alien. But it has also involved animation voiceovers ranging from The Great Dragon in Merlin, to Hazel the rabbit in Watership Down and hero Aragorn in a cartoon version of Lord of the Rings.

Now the 73-year-old who lives near Cromer has begun recording his role as the magical mirror - a first for the experienced actor, who said he was looking forward to it.

'It needs to be amusing and funny, but also threatening because the mirror tells the truth. It should take a couple of hours and be a lot of fun,' he added.

Mr Hurt said he was delighted to support the Little Theatre, and was enjoying getting more involved in local life.

He is set to turn on Cromer's Christmas lights on December 7 and do a reading at the town's civic celebration the following day.

'This is my home,' he said.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said it was a 'massive honour' to have someone of Mr Hurt's stature being part of the panto, adding: 'It will bring an extra sprinkle of stardust to the production.'

As well as telling the Wicked Queen the harsh truth of who was the fairest of them all' the mirror would also be having banter with the dame Nurse Notty Knickers.

The panto's professional cast is bolstered by 24 youngsters from local schools, who will also play the dwarves.

Snow White has been written by up-and-coming West End star Killian Donnelly, currently starring in the Commitments stage show.

The show runs from December 13 to January 4. Tickets cost between £7 and £52 (families). To book call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.
