Bin collections across south Norfolk are to be scrapped on Mondays, as part of an overhaul of the way rubbish is disposed of.

From June 6, South Norfolk Council will be restructuring its waste and recycling collection routes.

The council says the new routes will make the service 'more customer friendly' with the changes based around a move to a four day collection week, with no household waste collections being made on Mondays in the towns of Wymondham, Diss, Harleston and Loddon and their surrounding villages.

This means future collection dates will not have to change when a bank holiday falls on a Monday and the council says fewer changes will result in fewer missed bins.

The changes come as new disposal contracts with Norfolk County Council mean that waste and recycling items will be sent to a single refuse disposal point in Costessey, instead of the current system of having three facilities where the district council's fleet of bin lorries can tip their rubbish.

South Norfolk Council also says the new no-Monday collection routes will help it to meet the predicted growing demand from new homes being built in the region.

In a statement the council said: 'The new routes will ensure that the waste and recycling service is as efficient as possible, that it is ready for future demands and that the council can continue to offer its residents a first class service.'

South Norfolk Council, which is the only authority in the county to operate its own bin lorry fleet, will be sending information out to every address in the district from April 18.
