Snakes alive! A 6ft serpent has slithered out of the clutches of its owner and is at large in a Norfolk seaside resort.

The imposing boa constrictor smashed the plastic walls of its cage and made a break for freedom in Cromer - taking its male mate along as an accomplice.

Owner Andrew Church tracked down the male snake, but has found the other slippery customer much more elusive.

Now the artist and tree surgeon is offering a reward for the return of the snake - if anyone is brave enough to approach the creature.

Mr Church, from Norwich Road, said: "Unfortunately they weren't happy with the hot weather and must have forced their way against the glass and cracked it."

The escape happened last Thursday, and Mr Church is worried that the unnamed fugitive will frighten people - although he is adamant that it is harmless.

"It's not going to attack anybody and it's not poisonous. It just wants a quiet life.

"I'm very fond of the snakes, and I'm devastated at losing it. In the short term it can survive, but if it begins to get cold it is in danger."

He said he was offering a £30 reward for its safe return, and anyone who spotted the snake should call him on 01263 514343.
