There was once a man who welcomed his first son on his birthday - the day of his own father's birth.

This may sound like the opening line of a riddle - but for the Cushing family, it is a reality.

For June 12 is the day in which three generations of the same family have been born.

First there was Lee Michael Cushing, born June 12, 1951. His son, Marc, was born on the same day in 1981.

And now, a third June 12 birth has been added to the family, with the arrival of Marc's first son Lee John, born this year.

Mr Cushing, 35, a cabinet maker, said: 'My father died when I was 10 years old, but I still remember having two birthday cakes in the house every year. My son Lee was actually born five days earlier than we expected it, so it was almost like fate.'

In fact, baby Lee's determination to share his father's birthday goes further than his early arrival.

Mr Cushing's wife, Claire, actually went into labour the night before, only for the lad to go back to sleep and wait for the morning.

Mr Cushing, of Long Lane, Southrepps, added: 'We named him Lee in tribute to his grandfather. We've done the same with his two older sisters – they both have Lee as a middle name

'He's the first boy in the family, so it's nice that he will be able to keep the family name alive.'

However, the generations have more connecting them than just birthdays.

In becoming a cabinet maker, Mr Cushing has followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, John Cushing.

And while his father's primary job was as a fireman, he too previously worked as a cabinet maker.

Now. Mr Cushing is hoping his son may one day follow in his footsteps.

He said: 'I'd love to think one day he will carry on the business – but only if he wants to of course.'
