Children at a Norfolk school re-created the masquerade from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet during a visit by an internationally-acclaimed chamber ensemble.

All 80 pupils at Yaxham Primary, near Dereham, created their own colourful masks for the workshop with Chroma on Friday.

The musicians captured the children's imagination with music from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, as well as excerpts from much-loved works by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev that were also inspired by the tragic tale.

They also answered questions and spoke to the children about their instruments between performances.

Teacher Masha Smith, subject leader for art, said: 'The musicians commented that it was the best school for children listening, participating and responding, so we're very proud.'

Pupils at the school are also looking forward to a Music for Youth workshop, and the older children have entered the Norfolk County Music Festival and hope to impress judges with the sound made by 30 ukuleles. later this month.
