A man's body was discovered on a north Norfolk beach this morning.

Norfolk police, the Sheringham and Cromer Coastguard teams and an ambulance were called to the bottom of the slipway in East Runton at about 7.30am. They left at 9.30am.

The body is believed to be a man in his 50s and the death is currently being treated as unexplained, according to a Norfolk police control room operator.

Angela Cox, who works at East Runton Stores, said: “You don’t expect a body to be washed up on the beach at East Runton.”

Rod Taylor, volunteer watch keeper at the Runton National Coastwatch Institution station on the slipway, said: “We have had seals wash up on the beach, but to have a human body when nobody has been reported missing came as a surprise. It was a bolt out of the blue when I started my shift today.”

He was not on watch when the body was removed but was told by previous coastwatch volunteers, on shift before him, the man was wearing jeans and a shirt.
