Police were called to AD Hurst and Son, on Baptist Road, just after 8.30am on Tuesday to reports of the incident.

Officers attended the garage and confirmed a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson said: “The building has been sealed off and officers will attend today and carry out initial enquiries with colleagues from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.”

Police were still at the scene of the incident on the outskirts of the Fenland village on Wednesday afternoon. AD Hurst has been trading in Upwell for more than 40 years.

One man, who said he was the owner of the business, said it had operated without incident since 1975 but he could not comment on what had happened.

Several vehicles, including a number of lorries, were parked in the yard outside the garages. A police car stood in the entrance to one of the buildings.

The East of England Ambulance Service said they were also called to the incident.

A spokesperson said: “An ambulance crew and an ambulance officer were dispatched to the scene to help. Sadly nothing could be done and the patient died at the scene.

A HSE spokesperson said: “HSE has been made aware of this incident. We’re supporting Norfolk Constabulary. The police currently have primacy.”
