Neighbours express shock after man dies at Wymondham town centre property

Emergency services were called after concerns were raised for the welfare of the man in Back Lane at 4.44pm on Friday.

Eyewitnesses said there were six police cars, two ambulances and two ambulance cars that attended the scene on the road, which runs through the town centre and is the access road to Wymondham Central Hall and the town's main library.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance was called at 5.15pm and landed on the pitch at King's Head Meadow, the home ground of Wymondham Town Football Club.

The man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other people were involved or injured, police have said.

Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

People living in Back Lane, which includes a footpath that leads to side alley of residential properties off the main street, spoke of their alarm at the sudden influx of police and emergency services.

Jackie Pittuck, who lives off the main street, said: 'I came home to find a police car across entrance and lots of emergency vehicles. We could hear the air ambulance overhead as it came in to land on the football field.

'It was obviously quite a shocking scene to come home to. I understand someone died and there weren't any suspicious circumstances, but we don't know more than that. I don't really know the neighbours other than to say hello to.'

Another woman who lives in Back Lane, but who preferred not to be named, described how she provided tea to comfort people who she believes were involved in the incident.

She said: 'I don't know what happened in detail other than someone has died which is a terrible tragedy. I took a cup of tea out to one lady who looked shaken and like she had had terrible news but she didn't say anymore and the police did not tell us more either. I don't know the lady other than to see her in the street.

'It was a shock to have this happen here and it was quite concerning. There were police cars everywhere and the air ambulance.'

Another neighbour, who also preferred not to be indentified, added: 'We are in the centre of town so we occasionally see police activity but not on this scale. It was obviously serious and it sounds like it is a tragedy.'
