"Crews used breathing equipment and hose reel jets to extinguish."

A joint police and fire investigation into the circumstances is under way.

Crowds were gathering outside the property last night.

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I don't like to earwig because I always think 'what if someone is hurt' or 'what if there's a cat in there', but I have never seen so many officers and firefighters and ambulance crews. I jumped out of my skin.

"There were a lot of people outside.

"No one knew what had happened and there was no sign of a fire until they opened the windows and all of the smoke came out. I can still smell it now.

"The man who lived there kept himself to himself.

"The emergency services did a marvellous job though.

"There were hoses everywhere, fire engines here and ambulances there.

"It was all really congested but the police did brilliantly to keep the traffic going smoothly."

Forensic officers remained outside the detached home last night, which has been cordoned off with police tape, while three police vans from the several emergency service vehicles called to the scene.

Another neighbour, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: "I was sitting in the lounge when I saw the air ambulance flying. I saw it landing and looked out of my window and saw everyone outside in the street.

"There was a lot of commotion but no one knew what had happened.

"The forensic team have been there all afternoon."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Norfolk police on 101 quoting reference CAD 255 of 2 June 2019.
