A man has been charged with the theft of a car transporter which led police on a 40 mile chase across two counties.

Police chased the vehicle for around 40 miles from Swaffham, Norfolk, to Spalding in Lincolnshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

During the pursuit the Iveco low loader smashed through safety barriers on the Swing Bridge at Sutton Bridge, which were lowered in a bid to stop it.

A 20-year-old man from Pontefract, West Yorks, was yesterday charged with aggravated vehicle-taking and assaulting a police officer.

A spokesman for the Lincolnshire force said the lorry had been reported stolen from Barnsley, South Yorks, overnight on January 17/18.

A stinger device was set up and eventually caused the lorry to slow, before it crashed through the gates of a factory in Western Hills, Spalding.
