A man has been arrested for attempted murder following a head-on crash which closed the A11 at Elveden for nearly six hours.

The crash between a Toyota Yaris and a Volkswagen Golf happened at the Elveden crossroads between the B1106 and A11 at around 2.30pm on Saturday.

Five ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, the East of England Air Ambulance and a doctor who was travelling on the road at the time attended the scene.

The driver of the VW Golf, a 29 year old man from Coventry, was arrested and taken into police custody for aggravated vehicle taking. He was subsequently arrested for dangerous driving and attempted murder. He was today bailed and detained under the Mental Health Act. He is due to return to the Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre on February 20.

There were five people in the Toyota Yaris, two adults and three children. The male driver, who is in his 40s, was taken to West Suffolk Hospital and is in a stable condition. The female front seat passenger, aged in her 40s, was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and is in a stable condition. Two teenage girls were taken to Addenbrookes and remain in a stable condition and a further teenage girl was taken to West Suffolk Hospital but has since been discharged.
