About 20,000 people have enjoyed the latest major art show at north Norfolk’s Houghton Hall - and now there are just two weeks left to see the striking exhibition that even turns the hall itself into an innovative piece of contemporary art.
LightScape: James Turrell at Houghton has attracted huge crowds of art lovers from across the country and around the world since it first opened on June 7, and it will close for the final time on October 24.
The exhibition sees American artist James Turrell use the west facade of Houghton Hall as the dramatic canvas for his latest work which has illuminated the building every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer.
A vibrant mix of other lightworks by Mr Turrell are also featured in LightScape which has won high praise from many national art critics.
The exhibition has also had visitors from countries including America, Australia, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, Israel, Lithuania, and the Netherlands as well as around the UK.
Norwich Theatre Royal has acted as the box office for people pre-booking tickets.
Peter Wilson, Norwich Theatre Royal’s chief executive, said: “James Turrell’s LightScape at Houghton Hall has been a great artistic and popular success, with which the Theatre Royal has been proud to be associated.
“Though we will be sad to see the end of this unique artist’s summer in Norfolk, we will always be grateful to David Cholmondeley and his team for making the exhibition possible, and proud that we were able to see and experience so many iconic masterpieces.
“The memory of Turrell’s extraordinary illumination of Houghton’s west façade will linger for many years.”
The Marquess of Cholmondeley, who owns Houghton Hall and has been passionate about collecting Mr Turrell’s work for many years, has previously described the exhibition as the fulfilment of a “long-held dream.”
The exhibition LightScape: James Turrell at Houghton is open from Wednesday to Sunday until October 24.
The illumination of the west facade of Houghton Hall takes place on Friday and Saturday evenings only.
