ARMED forces personnel who put their lives on the line for the country can get fighting fit thanks to a Lowestoft leisure centre.

Soldier, sailors, airman and Royal Marines will be able to get a bargain deal when they sign up to the Waterlane Leisure Centre.

Armed forces personnel will see a 50 joining fee waived and pay a reduced payment of 34.95 per month to use the centre's gym, swimming pool, spa, sports facilities, such as squash, and classes such as spinning.

The deal has been set up the Sentinel Leisure Trust, which operates the Waterlane Leisure Centre, as it realised armed forces personnel in the area deserved and would benefit from the reduced monthly membership fee.

At the moment other people are paying 40 a month for the all inclusive membership fee.

Nick Greenacre, operations manager, said 'I am pleased to announce this new package that we can offer to servicemen and women in the area who have unique reasons for requiring short term membership benefits.

'At Waterlane we are always asking customers for feedback and suggestions as to how we can improve services and membership options. 'Although we have pay as you go options negating the need for membership, there is always a requirement to meet the unique needs of key groups of people who require a different option.

'To this end service personnel will have a cash-payment option for full all-inclusive membership at a reduced cash price of 34.95 per month, with the joining fee of 50 being waived, which includes gym, swimming, spa, sports, squash, and climbing together with a range of studio classes and spinning on production of evidence of their service status.'

The new-look Waterlane Leisure Centre was re-opened in December following a 8m redevelopment.

The project, led by the Waveney District Council, which owns the building, and managed by the Sentinel Leisure Trust, has seen the centre transformed with a new learner pool, soft play area, thermal spa, beauty therapy area and meeting rooms.

It also has an improved fitness area, dedicated studio space, a refurbished main pool, caf and restaurant – all in more spacious surroundings.

Stephen Ardley, deputy leader of the council, said: 'This is another great example of our leisure partners being ready to adapt and offer a great deal to members of our community.

'There really is no more deserving group than those serving in our armed forces for such an excellent value for money package which gives them the chance to use our range of leisure and fitness facilities on a short term basis at a bargain price,'

In April 2011 leisure services were transferred to Sentinel Leisure Trust by the council.

They included Waterlane Leisure Centre, Bungay Pool and Gym. Oulton Broad Yacht Station, Beccles Yacht Station, Dip Farm Pitch and Putt, beach huts at Lowestoft and the beach lifeguard service
