Voters in Lowestoft will be offered their chance to quiz candidates who will be standing in the general election at an event this week.

A hustings is being held on Friday, December 6, at Lowestoft Town Football Club - but it will not be attended by the former MP.

While all candidates have been invited to the event, organised by the Waveney Trades Union Council and climate groups in Lowestoft, Conservative candidate Peter Aldous will not be attending, citing the organisers' lack of impartiality as the reason.

Mr Aldous said: "It is very important that husting events are run by impartial organisations like the press or churches.

"The people running this event are members of a group with political leanings and it is not appropriate.

"I will be providing a statement to be read out explaining my position on the issues being discussed."

The candidates will each introduce themselves and outline what they would like to achieve for Lowestoft and Waveney if elected, and there will be ample opportunity for the audience to ask them questions.

Candidates will also be questioned on their response to the climate emergency declared by Lowestoft Town, East Suffolk District and Suffolk County Councils.

The hustings will take place from 7pm until 9pm.

Also standing in the election are Labour's Sonia Barker, Green's Elfrede Bramley-Crawshaw, Dave Brennan of the Christian People's Alliance, and Liberal Democrat Helen Korfanty.

A spokesman for the event organisers said: "Members of the public are welcome to come and participate in what we hope will be a lively but respectful conversation."
