The benefits of walking, cycling and using public transport around Lowestoft will be promoted at a family fun event in the town centre on Saturday.

The Lowestoft Motion festival will include cycle stunt displays, the chance to test out eco cars and electric cycles, buses old and new to explore, cycle retailers, and a variety of entertainment and activities for all the family.

The festival will take place from 9am to 5pm on London Road North.

The event will also include an exhibition of the Design a vehicle for the future competition, which saw more than 2,000 school children from Dell Primary; Pakefield Primary; Northfield St Nicholas Primary; St Mary's Primary; Roman Hill Primary; Fen Park Primary; St Margarets Primary and Blundeston Primary Schools take part. The exhibition will be held in Lowestoft Library on Clapham Road South and an awards presentation will be made by Waveney MP Peter Aldous at 2pm.

Saturday's festival involves Suffolk County Council, Lowestoft Local Links and Lowestoft Vision and it follows a successful two-day cycle festival which took place in the town last year which was attended by several thousand people.

Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council's cabinet member for roads, transport and planning, said: 'The Lowestoft Motion festival is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Lowestoft to discover how they can travel more sustainably, which through walking, cycling or using public transport could provide many lasting health, wellbeing and monetary benefits.

'I encourage all to visit the festival and enjoy the wealth of activity and entertainment that has been organised.

'This is another stepping stone in support of the improvements to travel infrastructure in Lowestoft and promotes more efficient ways of moving around the town.'

Lowestoft Local Links is a three-year sustainable transport project funded by the Department for Transport which encourages more people to walk, cycle, use public transport and car share within the town.

The school competition was run by the Streets Ahead Schools Education Programme, which aims to help pupils understand the social, environmental, health and lifestyle benefits of making sustainable travel choices
