Town councillors have voted to hold talks with a firm which is building 300 homes in Wymondham over running a new community centre.

A lively debate took place during the Wymondham Town Council AGM over the centre currently being constructed by Taylor Wimpey in South Wymondham, as part of their agreement for the new development.

The council voted to enter into discussions with Taylor Wimpey with a view to take over the facility, with 10 votes in favour, one against and four abstentions.

Robert Savage, who has completed his year as mayor and has now been succeeded by previous deputy mayor Tony Holden, said he thought the motion was premature and that volunteers were better placed to run the hall.

But the majority of councillors agreed that Taylor Wimpey needed a body to advise on the design of the building.

A takeover will be considered in the future, but the councillors said if the new estate's residents wished to take over once they had moved in, the council would not stop them.

Later in the meeting at Wymondham Central Hall, councillor Joseph Mooney asked the council to back the campaign to get the A47 fully dualled.

The 'Just Dual It!' campaign, spearheaded by the EDP, Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, aims to put pressure on the government to commit to further improvements.

Mr Mooney said: 'It will be good not just for the Norfolk economy but the wider UK economy. It would help to provide better transport links for all road users, especially the haulage industry.'

Councillor Douglas Underwood said: 'There's been some horrific accidents and lots of lives lost. The sooner we can dual the A47 the better.'

There was a general agreement to support the campaign.

The town council also agreed to inform South Norfolk Council that the only asset in Spooner Row, Wattlefield and Suton to be potentially transferred to the new breakaway council is the Spooner Row playing field and car park.

The governance working group was given authorisation to create a small steering group of residents and representatives of local businesses and community groups for Wymondham's 2036 Neighbourhood Plan.
