Drivers have been warned that a road between Taverham and Ringland will be shut in October.
Norfolk County Council needs to carry out the £30,000 work on Ringland Road because a falling section of the bank just east of Ringland bridge is threatening the road's stability.
Due to the nature of the work and the narrow width of the road, it will have to be closed to traffic for a week, starting on Monday, October 3.
The diversion route will be via Ringland Road, Beech Avenue, Fakenham Road, Marl Hill Road, Ringland Lane, The Street and back onto Ringland Road.
A spokesman for Norfolk County Council, which is carrying out the work with its contractors, apologised in advance for any inconvenience it would cause.
