Parents who are campaigning to improve town and village play areas across north Norfolk will be hoping for a share of a new £100,000 pot of cash.

The sum is likely to be set aside by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) to go towards refurbishment of some of its more run-down play areas.

The council is responsible for 31 play areas, including some that have triggered local fundraising campaigns because of their unkempt and outdated equipment.

They include the Sheringham Playpark Revamp group, which aims to raise £100,000 to replace equipment at the Cromer Road site, and Meadow Park Revamp, which is looking to raise £50,000 for The Meadow at Cromer.

Until now, the campaign groups have been expecting to find all of the money themselves. But, with NNDC's cabinet expected to agree on Monday to set aside the sum, there is hope that the council could chip in.

Chief executive Sheila Oxtoby said: 'One of the reasons we are setting aside money is because we are aware of the concerns of parents.

'It's raised an issue that may not just be in Cromer and Sheringham. We want to look at the rest of the play equipment that we own. There will be a report brought to cabinet after the equipment has been inspected and assessed.'

When Meadow Park Revamp was set up last autumn, chairman Gemma Bailey said: 'When I started playing at The Meadow I was about six or seven. But there's nothing at all for the under fives. It's the biggest park in Cromer and it's in the centre of the town, so it needs to be better.'

At Sheringham, frustration at the condition of the Cromer Road play equipment - some of which is 35 years old - prompted a group of parents to get together to do something about it.

The group has already raised thousands through a series of events, and has been boosted by a £1,200 donation from the family of Jamie Wright, 38, who died last year. They gave one-third of the collection cash from his funeral to the revamp group.
