Five Labour parliamentary candidates standing for Norfolk seats have signed a letter to the Observer calling for the rail network to be brought back into public ownership.

The letter says 'rail fares in Britain are contributing to the cost-of-living crisis, with season tickets now the largest monthly expense for many people, costing even more than the mortgage or rent'.

It praises the not-for-profit model which runs the East Coast line, and calls for it to be extended to the rest of the rail network as existing contracts come up.

The letter is signed by 31 Labour candidates in next year's general election, including Clive Lewis (Norwich South), Jessica Asato (Norwich North), Lara Norris (Great Yarmouth), Deborah Sacks (South Norfolk) and Peter Smith (South West Norfolk).
