The fun can start for children on a new estate after the ribbon was finally snipped on a new natural play area that they helped create.

Youngsters near Yew Drive, in Brandon, will be able to climb, swing and play on new equipment that is now officially open.

The park features modern integrated play equipment that fits in with the woodland surroundings.

It was designed with the help of pupils from nearby Glade Primary School, who were asked what they would like to see at the park and had the chance to judge designs.

Councillors from Forest Heath District Council, who ran the project, joined children on Friday to open the park.

Cllr Warwick Hirst, portfolio holder for health, leisure and culture, said: 'This is a play area which gives children the chance to explore and learn about nature. The natural backdrop will appeal to their imaginations and it will change through the seasons, with dappled shade in summer where they can run around and leaves to kick in autumn.

'It will give parents and children a great excuse for being outdoors, whatever the weather. We have lots of young families living nearby and this is just the kind of creatively designed, new-style play area which helps keep people fit and healthy.'

The scheme cost £53,000, with equipment provided by play equipment specialists, Wicksteed Leisure.

Councillors Stephen Edwards and Eddie Stewart joined Mr Hirst for the ribbon cutting.
