Clive Lewis could be a 'next generation' leader of the Labour Party, John McDonnell has said.
The Norwich South MP – who, after successive promotions is now the party's shadow business secretary and is being tipped as an heir to veteran left-winger Jeremy Corbyn – was praised by the shadow chancellor for his creativity and ability to inspire people.
Questioned about the Mr Lewis's future leadership prospects, Mr McDonnell said the MP, who joined parliament in 2015, had already demonstrated he was effective in driving policy.
'We have a really good team now and within the new shadow cabinet we have got the next generation of the Labour leadership,' he said. 'You take Clive Lewis, along with Richard Burgon, Becky [Rebecca] Long Bailey, Angela Rayner – that whole team now of that new generation have been brought forward by us for the future. They are the foundations. He will be part of that team no matter what. We will see what role in the future. He is incredibly talented and creative, but he is good because he can inspire people as well.'
