A Norfolk MP has called on the government to ban imports of pork from countries that do not comply with EU laws on pig farming.
On January 1 new regulations came into force that ban the use of farming methods that see sows kept in individual metal stalls.
Yet while the UK is already fully compliant with the rules, the majority of EU nations are not.
Speaking in a House of Commons debate this evening South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon said it meant farms in those countries enjoyed a competitive advantage due to lower costs.
He said: 'If illegal farms either complied with the law as they should, or stopped producing pork altogether, this would tighten the supply chain and lift pork prices, creating a brighter future for those who have made substantial investments in making sure the pork they produce is legal.'
He added: 'We should refuse to allow meat that is produced illegally from entering the United Kingdom.'
