Thursday is set to be a make-or-break day for a skatepark in Cromer.

North Norfolk District Council's development committee will decide whether or not to approve the plan to construct the facility at The Meadow on the edge of the town.

But campaigners for and against the skatepark will be kept on tenterhooks, as officers will not make their recommendation until the meeting, which is at 9.30am at the council's headquarters on Holt Road.

The application comes before councillors because it was called in by NNDC leader Keith Johnson in the wake of 11 letters of objections being received from nearby residents.

A report to Thursday's meeting lists reasons for the opposition, including noise, potential antisocial behaviour, a 'visually intrusive, ugly concrete structure', wildlife impact and inappropriate location.

But it adds that 23 letters of support have also been received.

The report says more information is required about whether the skatepark would obstruct a public footpath, and comments are awaited from the council's environmental health officer about potential noise from the concrete structure.

It points out that the site is a 'public recreational space' next to a play area, zip wire and pitch and putt course, and says: 'The principle of such a use in this location is considered to be acceptable as it would improve the recreational facilities in that area.'

The recently-founded Cromer Skatepark committee is seeking to develop a facility for skateboards, scooters and BMXs.

Efforts to develop the skatepark have been ongoing for many years, and included a site being earmarked then withdrawn at Happy Valley - amid concerns about emergency service access.
