A councillor has resigned from the ruling Conservative group on West Norfolk council.

Stephenie Smeaton, who has represented the Heacham ward since 2007, has joined the five-strong Independent Alliance.

Mrs Smeaton, 66, said: 'I think people are more important than political groups. I really am a people person.

'It's about freedom of expression, not rubber-stamping what cabinet says. Because I've changed to be an Independent Alliance person, I have much more freedom now.'

Council leader Nick Daubney could not be contacted for comment. Mrs Smeaton's resignation leaves the Conservatives still in control of the council, with 39 seats, followed by Labour (12), the Independent Alliance (6), the Liberal Democrats and Independents (2 each) and one vacant seat.
