More Norwich roads are set for changes in the latest scheme aiming to make the city's streets safer for cyclists.

A £340,000 project will see new road humps installed to slow down drivers in Waterloo Road and Angel Road.

But a proposal which would have seen the traffic-light controlled crossing at the junction of Waterloo Road and Angel Road replaced has been put on hold.

Consultation took place over the possibility of replacing it with a zebra crossing, along with a second zebra crossing on Waterloo Road to the south of the Angel Road junction.

A petition organised by Labour Sewell ward councillors garnered 89 signatures in support of keeping a signalised crossing, but with a raised table.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, one of the Labour councillors for the ward, said: 'We fought long and hard to get the pedestrian crossing and feel it not only benefits pedestrians crossing on that part of Waterloo Road, but also the cars and cycles coming out of Angel Road to turn right on to that busy junction and trying to get into the city.'

The Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind said that signal-controlled crossings are 'vital' for visually impaired people, allowing them to cross roads with confidence.

But the Norwich Cycling Campaign had favoured the two zebra crossing option on raised tables, saying that would provide greater calming across the whole junction.

The issues will be discussed when Norwich highways agency committee meets on Thursday.

Officers are recommending there now be further consultation, but they have pulled back from replacing the traffic lights.

In their report which will go before councillors, they say: 'The option of two zebra crossings on raised tables on Waterloo Road at its junction with Angel Road is suggested as being the best solution for this junction for both cyclists and pedestrians.

'However, with the existing signal crossing in good working order and not being at the end of its working life, it is recommended to leave it in place and not to make amendments to the layout of the Angel Road / Waterloo Road junction at this current time.

'It is anticipated that once the crossing reaches the end of its working life in around six to eight years time, that would be the opportunity to make the changes.'
