The reconstruction of the service will see the closure of the small offices in Swaffham, Watton, Attleborough and Dereham town centre.

The customer service teams will be consolidated at the two most-visited officers, at the council's headquarters at Elizabeth House in Dereham and its St Nicholas Street Office in Thetford.

The authority has said it will be improving the support available with the two offices being revamped, the installation of self-service machines, and more staff made available.

Councillor Alison Webb, Breckland Council's executive member for people and information, said: 'We have seen falling footfall at our satellite offices, a rise in people contacting us online, and we anticipate that an increase in visits to our main sites in Dereham and Thetford will continue further when Universal Credit is rolled out later this year.

'In short, we are putting greater resources where the majority of our customers need us most.'

Currently, the smaller sites are open between two to five days per week. The council said figures show there is a falling demand for these offices, with on average five people visiting the Swaffham and 12 visiting Watton in a day.

The offices should remain open until the summer.
