Tackling fuel poverty is the goal of a Winter Wellbeing Fair being planned for Costessey.

The fair, to be held on Thursday (January 26) at the Costessey Centre in Longwater Lane, is part of a national Warm Homes Campaign being run by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA).

People will be able to get advice on energy efficiency at the event, with practical tips on insulating their homes and reducing heating costs.

There will also be cookery demonstrations showing people how they can save money on their food bills.

Both South Norfolk and Broadland district councils are backing the fair.

Yvonne Bendle, South Norfolk's cabinet member for well-being and early intervention, said: 'The health and well-being of our residents is a priority for the council and fuel poverty is a serious and growing concern, with 433 local households unable to afford to heat their homes.

'Through the Warm Homes Campaign we hope to improve the life chances of residents who are struggling with their fuel bills and ensure they can stay warm and healthy in their homes this winter.'

Andrew Proctor, leader of Broadland District Council, said: 'Events such as this are a great way to find out more about how we can all stay warm and well through the colder months.

'An array of advice and support will be on offer to visitors at the wellbeing fair, from how to save money on your energy bills to tips on healthy meals. I hope to see as many residents there as possible.'

Residents attending the event will be able to get free advice and support on reducing heating costs, care and repair help and information on the Handyperson scheme and healthy living advice.

There will also be tips on beating loneliness and isolation, debt and money advice.

The fair will run from 10am to 12.30pm and free refreshments will be provided by Tesco.

There will also be a separate slow cooker workshop to help people cook hot and healthy meals cheaply and those attending will be given a slow cooker to take home with them. The workshop is for residents in receipt of means tested benefits who are over 65 or have a health condition or is caring for someone who does.

The event is on Tuesday 31 January at the Bob Carter Centre in Drayton. To book your place please call 01508 533677.
