New life is to be breathed into a boarded-up Golden Triangle shop after planning permission was granted for it to be turned into a caf and art gallery.

The shop, at 224 Unthank Road, has become an eyesore since WM Norkett lighting and electrical shop closed its doors two years ago.

Following the closure of the Norkett store, which had been in the street for the best part of 30 years, the front of the shop has been daubed with graffiti.

But applicants Russell and Sophie Eade are now looking forward to converting the former shop, after Norwich City Council's planning committee this week granted planning permission.

Councillors agreed to give permission for the shop to be converted to an art gallery and a caf, with a building at the back due to be turned into six artist studios and a four-bedroom home.

The proposals received a mixed response from neighbours. One couple who wrote to the city council in support said: 'Having had to view the ghastly existing building and its deterioration for a number of years we look forward to improvement.'

But others raised concern over the number of parking spaces proposed, fearing that, with just two spaces planned, parking could overflow into the residents-only Beechbank Road.

However, council officers had recommended approval, stating: 'The overall benefits of the new use are considered to far outweigh the occasional drawbacks of a few visitors who might chance to park in the private road, which could be signed accordingly'.
