Stuart Cordy believes Mrs May should keep her job. He said: 'Theresa didn't run a good campaign and lost it more than Corbyn won it. However, the Conservatives did win.

'The last thing they need now is a leadership battle. Line up behind Theresa as your leader and get on with it. That's what I voted for no matter how it turned out.'

Lynda Sanders agreed. She said: 'No I do not, because of the threat of terror on our streets, we need a period of stability. I believe that she has had a knock to her confidence but I am sure it will make her stronger in the long run.'

And in support of Mrs May, Christine Hewson said: 'May is a strong person who although believed we should stay in Europe will get us a good deal and can hold strong. She was misled by her advisors who are now gone. We don't want anymore upheaval let's get out of Europe and get this country back on track and looking after its own.'

But not everyone was in support of the prime minister.

Heather Browning said: 'Yes she should go, this was her ego trip and it failed. She's been shown to cower from the public and be devoid of feeling for anyone but herself. She's damaged goods.'

Colin Hart agreed. He said: 'Of course she should resign. She has cost the country millions by calling an election that she mistakenly thought would bring her a landslide victory and boost her ego.'

And Hilary Gostling said: 'A vote of no confidence needs to be called. She showed, and is showing, a shameful lack of judgement and integrity in putting her own ambition before her party's- and her country's interest. Her attempts to forge an alliance with the DUP are misguided and potentially disastrous.'
