A Mediterranean-style café will now be able to serve alcohol and provide entertainment despite fears of potential noise, anti-social behaviour, litter and vandalism.

The premises licence application for The Funky Mackerel, on Sheringham promenade, was made by owner Terry-Jane O'Neill and it was discussed today (Tuesday) by a North Norfolk District Council sub-committee licensing committee in Cromer.

Miss O'Neill's application was for a 24/7 licence, but the three committee members who sat in on yesterday's hearing decided only alcohol and entertainment should be provided between 10am and 11pm each day.

Other conditions included that the doors and windows should remain shut during live performances; plastic glasses should only be taken out onto the café balcony and signs should be put up telling customers to be quiet.

Objections came from the owner of the building and Sheringham Town Council.

The licence application also attracted 15 separate objections from residents, holiday home owners and other businesses.

No-one who was against the application attended the meeting, but Miss O'Neill spoke to committee members John Wyatt, Anthea Sweeney and Barry Smith.

She said she did not want to turn her café into a pub and expected to mainly sell alcohol with food.

After the meeting Miss O'Neill added the additional licence was needed for the 'progression of the business'.
